Teenapalooza 2012

February 16, 2012

East Beach Photography will be covering Teenapalooza again this year.  Last year’s event was at the Sandler Center which has amazing lighting but is a bit overwhelming in size.  This year’s show will have many of the same great musicians as last year but will be at The Jewish Mother at Hilltop in Virginia Beach.

Years ago, I used to go clubbing in Georgetown and enjoyed the music because of the intimacy of the smaller clubs.  I think you’ll find that The Jewish Mother is like that and great food, drink and, in this case, the best youth musicians in Hampton Roads.

So get your tickets and see you there!

Courtney, Max and Maddy

February 5, 2012

There is nothing more warming for a photographer than to process portraits from a summer session in the winter.  Usually, proof selections are made within a month or so but Courtney and Max had their minds (and hands) full with Maddy so selections were not made until the holidays and now here we are in winter.  So, it’s been fun processing great photos with that perfect summer light and leaves on the trees that are green.  But, in a few minutes Super Bowl kicks off and sorry you guys, time out for the rest of tonight to watch the game!

A wonderful voice in the sea of Hampton Roads musicians is Bria Kelly. Last week an article on Bria appeared in the Pulse section of the Virginian-Pilot. The image was captured by East Beach Photography at last year’s Teenapalooza concert at the Sandler Center.

One of the most satisfying moments for a photographer is to see their work in print! And what’s even better is you can come out and see Bria, and other great local musicians, at this year’s Teenapalooza event in March!

Monica & Family

A family portrait is a precious picture! And any photographer will tell you that it’s not an easy image to create. Why? Because in most cases you’ve got kids that won’t cooperate, a setting sun that won’t slow down, and variables that only crop up on the day of the shoot. Yes, Photoshop is always in a photographer’s back pocket but when it comes together like this…perfect smiles, relaxed and genuine…with no need to Photoshop anything, that is a great day for any photographer!

Who would believe that high school kids could make music like this! In my generation, many of the greats became members of the “27 Club”, and that was thought of as young. Today, subtract 10 years and forget the club label. Can’t wait to see where this band of musicians end up in the next 10 years! Here are some choice pics that East Beach Photography took at the concert on December 28th.

Ted Johns Photography

December 15, 2011

For many weddings, a second photographer (or second shooter as they’re known) is necessary to capture all the best images of the day.  The prime photographer will focus on the bride’s preparations while the second shooter is getting those shots of the groom and groomsmen.  There are so many possibilities for taking creative shots when you have an assistant to move lights, hold reflectors, or simultaneously capture images from different angles.

An added benefit is when you have two professional photographers that work together well.  In those situations there is synergy for capturing the elusive, magical moments that occur during all weddings.

For me, Ted Johns is one of those photographers and sadly he has moved to Wisconsin so our opportunity to regularly partner on weddings has come to a close.   Recently, Ted gave East Beach Photography a “shout out” for our time working together photographing Lara and Kevin’s wedding in Virginia Beach.  Here is the link to his blog post –

Now Ted and I will just have to seek out some destination wedding assignments so we can work together again!

Wedding images and music go together like bread and butter!  Here is a wonderful slideshow of Kirsten and Ryan’s wedding day.   And many thanks to Erick at Emotion Media for providing the means to create such beautiful slideshows.  They are a terrific company to work with!

Enjoy the show!

Kirsten and Ryan tied the knot in September at the Willow Oaks Country Club in Richmond, VA.  Though rain showers moved the ceremony inside, nothing dampened the fun!  Here are a few pictures of their wedding celebration.  In the works is a slideshow of all the great images of the day!
